Spring 2008

PREVENT CRABGRASS & OTHER BROAD LEAF WEEDS THIS YEAR!
Crabgrass is a common weed that everyone knows. What most people don’t know though is that in the early spring; late March; is when you should first treat your lawn with a crabgrass pre-emergent.

This nuisance weed starts to come out in the summer time when the temperatures at night remain warm. Once crabgrass makes its home in your grass, it is very unpleasant and difficult to eliminate. Crabgrass spreads by seeds produced in the soil from previous years. Each crabgrass plant can produce thousands of seeds and live up to 15 years in your soil. With this type of intensity and persistence it is easy to see that prevention is the best cure for crabgrass.

A crabgrass pre-emergent from
Perf-a-Lawn will form a barrier on the soil surface that will prevent crabgrass from germinating.

MOWING SAFETY TIPS
With the warmer weather approaching, it won’t be long before the grass will need its first cut. When it comes to mowing, safety should be your first concern. Here are a few tips for you to help keep you safe this mowing season.

● Read your mowers operator’s manual.
● Dress proper: Wear sturdy shoes, long pants and close-fitting cloths. Don’t wear any loose jewelry that could get caught in a moving part.
● Clean up and clear out your lawn before you start to mow. Pick up anything that could be thrown by the mower, such as rocks, toys, and trach. Also clear the lawn of people, especially children and pets.
● Keep hands and feet away from moving parts.
● Store gas in an approved container, away from the house. Fill up before you start, while the engine is cool.
● Operate the mower carefully: Turn off the engine before attempting to unclog or work on the mower.

REPAIRING SNOW MOLD DAMAGE
Where winter is long and harsh, a deep persistent layer of snow insulates the roots of grass damaging the roots and preventing proper growth.

To prevent damage to your lawn, in the spring you should rake the affected areas to disrupt the encrusted mat and apply fertilizer to encourage new growth.

LIME IS WHAT YOUR LAWN NEEDS THIS SPRING

Why Lime? … Liming is an important part of a turf management program. Your soil’s pH has much to do with the health of your lawn.

When a lawn’s pH level is off, it effects your lawn in several ways …
● the lawn is more susceptible to rapid thatch development.
● your lawn will lose its vigor.
● you will have greater fungus activity.
● your lawn will be less tolerant to drought
● the effectiveness of fertilizers and pesticides used on your lawn will be low.

Excessive acid in the lawn is proven to be detrimental to your grass rooting system. Your lawn’s natural resistance to disease decreases when a lawn is too acidity.

Our liming program is specifically designed to increase the nutrients your lawn needs.
Call Perf-a-Lawn for a soil test today; a nominal fee will be applied which will be credited towards your lime treatment if needed.

Soon it will be time to consider getting your lawn cleaned up from this past winter. Call Perf-a-Lawn today to take advantage of our Clean-up special. Our Service is thorough and efficient and will be performed to your satisfaction.

DO LAWNS NEED FERTILING?

YES! Most lawn care experts agree that they should. Listed below are ten of the most important reasons for fertilizing your lawn on a timely basis.

1. Fertilizing supplies nutrients needed during the high demands of the growing season.
2. A vigorous and healthy lawn resists weeds.
3. Proper nutrition protects your grass from pest infestation and helps it recover should one occur.
4. A thriving lawn is more resilient to foot traffic.
5. Proper pH is maintained in your soil.
6. Nitrogen is supplied for leaf growth and a deep green color.
7. Phosphorous is provided for establishing seedlings and root growth.
8. Potassium is given for greater tolerance to hot and cold weather and against wear.
9. An application of fertilizer in the fall prepares your lawn for winter and speeds its recovery in the spring.
10. Fertilizing helps to establish new lawns and helps maintain established lawns.

PERIMETER PEST CONTROL PROGRAM

Your home is a great place to live and it is that very reason that pests want to share it with you! The fact is 90% of bugs come from outside the home.

Perimeter pest control is a way to control insect invasions in your home. It’s like a moat around a castle. It provides an insect shield around the base of your home that will keep out a variety of insects. The great thing about it is that bugs meet their demise without even entering your home.

The Perimeter Pest program consists of four scheduled applications applied three feet up and three feet out from the foundation around your entire home. When the work is done outside, there are no chemicals to worry about inside your home. It also means that you don’t have to be home when it’s done. The treatment begins to work immediately. Yet it is safe for children and pets once its dried.

Call us today to schedule your Perimeter Pest Control program!

MUSHROOMS

Mushrooms can be an annoyance but they do no harm to the grass.  Mushrooms are fungi that grow on decaying vegetable matter in the soil.

Mushrooms often pop up following heavy rains or watering.  They can be removed by raking or mowing.  Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be applied to the lawn to kill them.  As the ground dries out, they will start to disappear.

SPRING TIME ADVICE
Before you get started on this year’s lawn chores, make sure the ground has dried enough so you don’t compact the soil while working on the lawn. If it feels pretty firm under foot, then it’s ok to get started. A few things to think about this spring is raking and seeding. Fall is the best time to renew an entire lawn, but spring rains and cool weather will provide good conditions to fix up some bare spots and thin areas.
